State rolls out ‘granny flat’ program for WMass homeowners with $200-$500K to spare

For aging parents or in-laws, grown kids hoping to save some money or caretakers needing a place to call home, accessory dwelling units might be a good fit.

Gov. Maura Healey included a provision on ADUs in her $5.1 billion housing bond bill, legalizing them by right in 2024. Still, Western Massachusetts communities have been slow to latch on.

An ADU accelerator program, specifically geared toward Pioneer Valley homeowners in Hampden, Hampshire and Franklin counties, could change that. ADUs, or in-law units or “granny flats,” are either attached or detached spaces no larger than 900 square feet.By
