Modesto is encouraging residents to build accessory dwelling units

The city is offering a free, step-by-step, pre-approved plan to build ADUs.

In an effort to expand the housing supply in the region, Stanislaus County is encouraging homeowners to build an accessory dwelling unit, or ADU.The county is collaborating with the cities of Modesto, Oakdale, Riverbank, Turlock, and Waterford and TPH Architects to create free and pre-approved plans for residents to expedite the process.The county says these plans will be “accessible at no cost to property owners within any of the partner jurisdictions, in order to simplify the permitting process and reduce the expenses associated with adding ADUs to the property.”To help in those efforts, the city of Modesto has step-by-step instructions on how to add an ADU to an existing structure or new build.
