NORWALK, Conn. (WTNH) β The City of Norwalk has made it easier for its homeowning residents to build rental units on their property, otherwise known as accessory dwelling units (ADUs).
The city has updated its zoning laws and regulations to increase the maximum size of a detached ADU from 700 to 1,000 square feet, make it easier to convert some existing structures such as garages and allow some detached ADUs to bypass a full Planning and Zoning Commission review if they meet certain requirements.
βThere is no single fix or magic cure for the housing affordability crisis, Norwalk Mayor Barbara Smyth said. βThat means we have to be creative and willing to pursue practical, commonsense solutions that can chip away at a problem burdening families here in Norwalk and in communities across the country. Making it easier for homeowners to create accessory dwelling units is one meaningful step we can take.β
The city said ADUs have been gaining traction nationally and residents have been urging lawmakers to stimulate their development by relaxing restrictions, reaching out to homeowners and providing incentives.
The changes went into effect on April 24.
